History Where does Paramount Chief Originate?

The title "paramount chief" originated with Moshoeshoe I, the founder of the Basotho nation. This title was used for the leaders of the Basotho people until Lesotho gained its independence in 1966. Upon independence, the system changed from chiefs to kings, with the title of "king" being adopted for the nation's monarch.

HISTORY

Lesotho, formerly known as Basutoland, gained independence from British rule on October 4, 1966. With independence came a significant change in the political structure of the country. The title "paramount chief" was replaced by the title "king," reflecting the country's shift to a constitutional monarchy. The first king of independent Lesotho was Moshoeshoe II, the direct descendant of Moshoeshoe I, thereby continuing the legacy of leadership under a new title.
